Palomnus the Faun
Not much is known of his history prior to the Battle of Beruna, but rumor had it he fought in several of the unsuccessful uprisings against Jadis and was an instrumental figure in the Narnian underground resistance, such as it was. He may have been briefly imprisoned in the Witch’s castle in the course of his activities, but again, such whispers were never confirmed. With these stories in mind, it might surprise no one to hear he bore little love for the faun Tumnus. Possessed of a dry, ready wit and an adroit, practical mind, Palomnus did much to provide the High King with whatever he needed most, whether a clever remark designed to prompt laughter or a quiet insight given in the midst of confusion. He was quite conscious of his place, but he never hesitated to offer words of comfort or even correction. Other servants (and sometimes the other Three) often giggled to hear him good-naturedly scolding Peter as if the High King was a wayward child. By the end of the Golden Age, he had progressed from mere valet to confidante and friend. Palomnus appears in "The Armor of Aslan", "A Cup of Cambric Tea", "Live and Let Live", "For Ever Kneel'd", "For Whom the Bell Tolls", is mentioned briefly in "Beautiful Letdown" and also appears in Darknight's stories "Call of the Western Wild", and "King Edmund's Crusade" Palomnus is one of the first OC characters I created, and he is near and dear to my heart. As I’ve developed him more, I started to see his relationship with Peter as mirroring through a glass darkly the relationship between P.G. Wodehouse’s Jeeves and Wooster. Peter is nowhere the fool Bertie appears to be, and Palomnus does not resort to the out-and-out manipulation of Jeeves to bring events off to his satisfaction, but the High King and the faun are certainly intended as an homage. It took me a really long time to find an actor who fit my image of Palomnus. I came across J.J. Feild just recently and was smitten. He’s much too young now, but if you mentally age him about 25-30 years and give him the ubiquitous faun goatee and horns, he nails the part. This picture almost does him justice in the role (a bit older and more worn-looking).
