Who Are The Gwethil?
Artist's Impression of the Gwethil From left to right; Kaylhar, Lady Deb, Melanie, Jess, Almyra, Darknight, FireMaiden, Cath, Angoliel, Merc, Dread Lady Freya (For a larger version of the picture above, click the graphic!)
It seems like everyone and her brother on the internet (which is a series of tubes invented by Al Gore) has some kind of secret identity, alter ego or something similar. And the Gwethil are no different (oh, come on! You thought that our real names were Almyra, Angoliel, Kaylhar and Darknight? Wow – you are gullible. Would you like to buy a bridge?)
However, the various internet identities of the Gwethil are an unconnected series of alter egos, and we wanted to have a more unified series of personalities. Inspired by Darknight's own nickname, and the prevalence of gorgeous women in spandex in DC Comics, the choice was made to identify each of us with a hero from the DC universe.
So, below are the descriptions of each of us – bear in mind that we only reveal what we want to reveal, and not all of it is necessarily true . . .
Additionally, the little icons of each heroine (or hero, in the case of Darknight) are displayed throughout this website – by looking at the heroine (or hero) icon on any given page, you can tell who wrote that story or created that character or whatever. Just hover your mouse over to see the name of the author.
Even better, some stories are collaborations (either formally, or merely by inspiration). Then, we've displayed one or more characters together – and some of them are even links to pages which describe how the collaboration or inspiration worked. Aren't we kind?
For now, check out our somewhat facetious descriptions of ourselves.

Who? : Almyra
Secret Identity? : Catwoman
Why? : Almyra keeps cats, and has worked with Darknight on a number of projects - but most often they each create a distorted mirror of the other's work. Also, Darknight has to admit he thinks she's awfully cute . . .
The latest mother of the group (at least as far as we know - put it this way, any Gwethil!Spawn which are younger than Alymra's charming offspring are so small we haven't noticed them yet) Almyra writes elegant stories filled with brotherly love, Christian symbolism and hot guys.

Who? : Angoliel
Secret Identity? : Poison Ivy
Why? : Angoliel is thorny but beautiful, and has an aluring poison to her - like good Czech absinthe. Also, Poison Ivy is traditionally drawn with really good hips - just like Angoliel has.

Who? : Cath
Secret Identity? : Black Canary
Why? : Cath is one of the singers of the group, and Black Canary is famed for her "canary cry" - a sonic superpower capable of stunning anything with ears.

 |
Who? : Darknight
Secret Identity? : Batman
Why? : Do you really need to ask why the guy whose nickname is shared with Batman is Batman? I didn't think so. Additionally, it matches well with Almyra and Melanie.

Who? : FireMaiden
Secret Identity? : Hawk Girl
Why? : FireMaiden rides horses, and her favorite is called Hawk. So, she's Hawk Girl. What? You wanted more than a bad pun?

 |
Who? : Dread Lady Freya
Secret Identity? : Robin
Why? : Another bad pun - Freya's real name is Robyn.
She could tell you about herself, but then she'd have to make you disappear.
|
 |
Who? : Jess
Secret Identity? : Supergirl
Why? : Jess is an "alien" by the most technical definition (she's Australian) Jess is also one of the schoolgirls of the group - which was Supergirl's secret identity.

 |
Who? : Kaylhar
Secret Identity? : Zatanna
Why? : The magician Zatanna is, like Kaylhar, eclectic and unorthodox in her belief structures. Also, Kaylhar really loves the top hat.

 |
Who? : Lady Deb
Secret Identity? : Wonder Woman
Why? : Why not?
Profile description.
|
 |
Who? : Melanie
Secret Identity? : Batgirl
Why? : Melanie is often refered to as Darknight's padawan learner, Batgirl was an obvious choice.
Mel is from south of the Mason-Dixon line, and has the accent, the husband with the pick-up, shotgun & coon-dawg, and the frequent-shopper card from WalMart to prove it. She would be mentioned by name in relevant song, but Rodney Atkins couldn't rhyme "Melanie" with anything.

 |
Who? : Merc
Secret Identity? : The Huntress
Why? : One of the youngest of the Gwethil, and one of the younger heroes of the DC universe. Additionally, Merc is one of the Catholics is the group (Darknight is another) and the Huntress shares her religion.
